A computationally efficient method for nonlinear multicommodity network flow problems

چکیده
In this paper, we present a new method for solving nonlinear multicommodity network flow problems with convex objective functions. This method combines a well-known projected Jacobi method and a new dual projected pseudo-quasi-Newton (DPPQN) method which solves multicommodity flow quadratic subproblems induced in the projected Jacobi method. The DPPQN method is a dual Newtontype method that differs very much from the conventional Lagrangian Newton method; our method fully exploits the structural advantages of network-type linear equality constraints to obtain a constant sparse approximate Hessian matrix with a decoupling structure and includes a novel finite-iteration successive projection and (truncated) seal algorithm to resolve the difficulty caused by coupling capacity constraints. The DPPQN method also consists of two decomposition effects, the commodity decomposition effect and the arc decomposition effect, which resolve the potential numerical difficulties caused by large dimensions. We show the convergence of our method including the convergence of the finite-iteration successive projection and (truncated) seal algorithm. Compared with the Frank–Wolfe with PARTAN algorithm in which a price-directive decomposition method is used to solve linearized multicommodity flow problems, our method is dramatically faster in terms of the CPU time on a Sparc-10 workstation at solving numerous nonlinear multicommodity network flow examples. q 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Optimal Routing in a Packet-Switched Computer Network
The problem of finding optimal routes in a packetswitched computer network can be formulated as a nonlinear multicommodity flow problem. The application of traditional mathematical programming techniques to the solution of the routing problem for reasonably large networks is computationally inefficient. Satisfactory results have been recently obtained with various heuristic techniques; however,...
متن کاملA Parallel Algorithm for Nonlinear Multi-commodity Network Flow Problem
In this paper, we propose a method to solve the Nonlinear Multicommodity Network Flow (NMNF) Problem. We have combined this method with a projected-Jacobi (PJ) method and a duality based method possessing decomposition effects. With the decomposition, our method can be parallel processed and is computationally efficient. We have tested our method on several examples of NMNF problem and obtained...
متن کاملA Fast Strategy to Find Solution for Survivable Multicommodity Network
This paper proposes an immediately efficient method, based on Benders Decomposition (BD), for solving the survivable capacitated network design problem. This problem involves selecting a set of arcs for building a survivable network at a minimum cost and within a satisfied flow. The system is subject to failure and capacity restriction. To solve this problem, the BD was initially proposed with ...
متن کاملInterior Point Methods for Linear Multicommodity Flow Problems
This article studies the linear multicommodity network flow problem. This kind of problem arises in a wide variety of contexts. A numerical implementation of the primal-dual interior-point method is designed to solve the problem. In the interior-point method, at each iteration, the corresponding linear problem, expressed as an augmented indefinite system, is solved by using the AINV algorithm c...
متن کاملOptimal multicommodity flows in dynamic networks and algorithms for their finding
In this paper we study two basic problems related to dynamic flows: maximum multicommodity flow and the minimum cost multicommodity flow problems. We consider these problems on dynamic networks with time-varying capacities of edges. For minimum cost multicommodity flow problem we assume that cost functions, defined on edges, are nonlinear and depending on time and flow, and the demand function ...
